Fast broadband a priority for over-55s when choosing where to live in retirement
Most over 55s consider the obtaining of a quick internet connection highly important when they are deciding where to live in their retirement. A study by retirement home provider Anchor has revealed that almost 2/3rds of over 55s believe good broadband connectivity is of the utmost importance. Jane Ashcroft, head of Anchor, commented: “Features such as a good internet connection are a cornerstone of any new development.”
Whilst safety was flagged up as the most important requirement of a retirement destination, with 85 per cent of over-55s saying this is a priority, it is now believed that the retirement generation value broadband amongst some of their top needs. This comes after the latest Quality of Life Survey by Halifax found that having access to a good broadband connection plays a key role in influencing how positively Brits view their local area. The survey saw Hart in north-east Hampshire named as the best place to live, followed by the Orkney Islands, Rutland, Wychavon and Winchester.
Government ministers have met with stakeholders in the broadband industry to push for greater investment in full-fibre. At present, only three per cent of premises in the UK can connect to a full-fibre line. Culture Secretary Karen Bradley and Ofcom head Sharon White have therefore met with representatives of Openreach, BT, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and Sky to find out why more is not being done to boost full-fibre coverage. Fibre specialists Hyperoptic and CityFibre also attended the meeting, along with several other smaller broadband providers, the Financial Times reports. This comes shortly after Digital Minister Matt Hancock said three per cent full-fibre coverage in the UK “will not stand”. “We will strain every sinew to get it rolled out in Britain,” he added.
